After two months, applications are in! The race committee now has the difficult job of going through numerous entries from all around the world from athletes eager to take on the world’s toughest adventure race.
“We’d like to thank all athletes for taking the time to apply for Red Bull X-Alps 2025,” says race co-founder Ulrich Grill. “There are so many strong applications. It will be a very difficult task to make the selection, ensuring everyone has what it takes to compete safely at the highest level while also giving the chance to promising rookies from a wide range of countries.”

For over 20 years Red Bull X-Alps has set the standard in adventure racing and anyone who is selected – male or female – has to be one of the fittest and strongest mountain athletes around. During the race, they can sometimes hike up to 5,000m of ascent or run 100km in a day.
Not only that, they also have to be among the world’s very best paraglider pilots, capable of flying across the wild and remote mountains of the Alps in conditions that can be very challenging.

The skills you need to be selected

For this reason, the race committee needs to carefully evaluate the capability and skill of every athlete. Race director Ferdinand Vogel explains what experience he wants to see: “We are primarily looking for safe athletes. Safety is more important to us than sporting success. It's not just about experience and pure numerical values. The athlete's current overall package is what interests us.”
Over the next few weeks he and the rest of the race committee, consisting of Ulrich Grill, event director Jojo Pölzl and safety director Jürgen Wietrzyk will carefully evaluate every athlete looking closely at their competition results, mountain flying ability and physical endurance.
